The fumes thus escape by an under-ground funnel (a) to a secondary furnace (b), where organicmatter in thje fumes was further destroyed by heat beforeescaping into the air by the chimney (c). The whole base ofthis establishment was constructed of concrete; and it wasinside an open shed covered with corrugated iron. (3) The slop and bath water was removed in undergrounddrains. The drains from the infectious diseases blocksemptied into a tank close to an engine room, wheredynamos for electric lighting of the hospital, &c., wereworked. The waste steam from the boilers wasconducted into the foul water tank, and was thusused for sterilizing the water before the effluent wasallowed to pass into ordinary surf ace or other channels.
