"Archipel des Indes Orientales…" East Indies Indonesia SANTINI/VAUGONDY 1784 map

Artist/engraver/cartographer: Santini, Paolo and Robert de Vaugondy, Gilles & Didier. Provenance: "Atlas Universel, dressé sur les meilleures cartes modernes", 1784 à Venise par P. Santini, rue Ste Justine, chez M. Remondini. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with original outline hand colour/color and decorative title cartouche. A decorative 18th century map of East Indian Archipelago, including present day Indonesia and the Philippines. The maps covers the East Indies including Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Celebes/Sulawesi, the lesser Sunda Islands and the Moluccas, the Philippines, part of New Guinea, The Malay peninsula and much of the east coast of Indochina, and part of the north coast of Australia/New Holland. The Philippines are well represented, however undue prominence is given to the "Nouvelles Philippines" (New Philippines), a large group of islands shown as being directly south and east of the Philippines themselves; these are likely an inaccurate representation of a mislocated and oversized Caroline Islands. New Guinea is also inaccurately represented. Shown east of the Paracel island is a small triangular (and apparently fictitious) island group marked as the "Cordon de S. Antoine ou les Lunettes" (St. Anthonys chain or the spectacles).
