As a rule, it causes lameness, only when it is in an acutely painfulstate, and when its size interferes with movement. CAPPED ELBOW. 335 TREATMENT.—^We oan generally arrest its development if wetreat it properly in its earliest stage. With this object in view,we should provide against the predisposing causes, by giving theanimal a soft bed to lie on, and let him have full length oftying-up rope, if he is in a stall. We should remove the shoe,. ^i^- ^57-—Capped hock. or get the horse shod with short shoes, and at night cover theheel with ,some soft material, such as felt, so that the shoe maynot hurt the elbow; or tie him up. The Offordand other elbow pads are effective appliances for accomplishingthis object. In Russia, an arrangement similar to the Offord padis used with those match trotters which are liable to hit theirelbows. It is well to use gentle massage (p. 664) and continuedfomentations of warm water for a few days, and after that rubin for a considerable time every day, during a fortnight or so,the following liniment: — Soap liniment ... ... ... ... ^ pint.
