Chemical equipment. Engraving of equipment used to purify chemicals by sublimation. This process involved heating a solid until it turns into a gas, leaving impurities behind. The gas turns back into a solid (the sublimate) when it is cooled. In this image, the rounded flask containing the original sample is at left. After the flask was placed in a furnace, the bell- shaped receptacle (at right) was connected to the flask to collect the sublimate. Image taken from a 1545 book which credited the design of this equipment to the Arabic alchemist Geber (721-815).
