Gladiator Equipment

These three illustrations depict gladiator equipment: a greave, an arm piece, and a galerus—all uncovered in Pompeii, an Italian town destroyed when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79. The greave and arm piece were probably for show rather than actual use. The gladiators known as Samnites wore a single greave and an arm piece. The galerus was found in the gladiators' barracks and is a copy in miniature dedicated as a votive offering. It was worn by the retiarii, who wore it on the shoulder. The space for the shoulder is well shown in the Pompeian bronze, which is decorated with small medallions of Hercules and two Cupids.
