Steam locomotive cabin. 19th-century artwork of the operating platform for an express locomotive used on the French railways in the 1880s. Various components and levers are labelled with letters. These include levers and gauges to monitor and control the steam pressure, and regulate the speed and braking of the train's engines, valves and compressors. Two viewing windows allow the driver to see forward. The brake cylinder (K) is underneath the cab. At centre (A) is the engine's fuel hatch.
