Acamprosate alcoholism treatment molecule. The medication is sold as the calcium(2+) salt under the name Campral. Acamprosate appears to stabilize disrupted neural signalling in the brain during alcohol withdrawal, but the mechanism is poorly understood. Acamprosate alone is usually ineffective, but when combined with counselling and social support the drug facilitates both reduced consumption and complete abstinence. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (black), hydrogen (white), oxygen (red), nitrogen (blue) and sulphur (yellow).
