Here also the pictures are very good, par-ticularly the large Van Dyck — painted presumably for an Altarpiece — of The Descent from the Cross; three Claude Lor-raines; The Battle of the Boyne, by Vander Meulen; aRubens, two Poussins, Feaiers, and Canalettos. Farther on we come to the Library, undoubtedly the finestroom in the house, decorated entirely in old Spanish mahoganyin the Empire style. The furniture includes two splendid escri-toires, which tradition says were formerly the property of LouisXIV. ; but surely, before talking of furniture, in a library weshould turn to the books. The bibliophile would delight inseveral Caxtons, a first folio of Shakespeare, a first edition ofDante, and a Book of Hours richly illuminated — in fact there isnot supposed to be a better example in the Bodleian.
