Blue sky view Oerlikon 20mm anti-aircraft gun on the deck of the SS Jeremiah O' Brien Liberty Ship, Pier 45, San Francisco, USA
The SS Jeremiah O'Brien, at Pier 45. Fisherman's Wharf, is one of two remaining fully functional, World War 2 Liberty Ships. The ship, one of 2710 built and launched during World War 2, was built in 1943 at South Portland, Maine, by the New England Shipbuilding Corporation. It was named after the first American to capture a British naval vessel during the Revolutionary War (War of Independence). The Jeremiah O'Brien made seven voyages during World War 2, ranging from England and Northern Ireland to South America, India and Australia. The ship also made eleven crossings of the English Channel carrying personnel and supplies to the Normandy beaches in support of the D-Day Landings. The O'Brien was mothballed after the war and saved from the scrapyard in 1979. Liberty Ships were quick and easy to build, moving at a slow knots ( mph). The Jeremiah O' Brien, besides anti-submarine guns at the bows and stern, carried eight 20mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns, one of which is seen here.
