Colonel Tallmadge mar-ried in 1784 Mary Floyd, daughter of General Floyd, oneof the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and madeLitchfield his permanent home. In 1801 he was elected toCongress and served sixteen years. His Litchfield homewas a great resort for Revolutionary officers, and when La-fayette visited this country in 1824 he came to Litchfieldto see his friend Tallmadge after an interval of forty Tallmadges store stood south of the house, andlater was moved to become the wing of Mrs. Kilbournshouse.
