China: 'Avalokitesvara'. Hanging scroll painting, Mogao Caves, Dunhuang, c. 910. This painting of Avalokitesvara or Guanyin was donated to the Mogao Caves by a revered nun named Yanhui 'on behalf of my elder sister and teacher and on the souls of my dead parents that they be born anew in Pure Land'. Yanhui stands on the right hand side of Avalokitesvara, her younger brother on the left. Guan Yin (Guanyin), also known as Kuan Yin and Guanshiyin, is the bodhisattva of mercy and compassion in Buddhism, and the East Asian equivalent of Avalokitesvara.
