A crowd of freed prisoners of bergen_Belsen concentration camp watching the last camp hut burn. Conditions were so squalid and disease rife that as soon as was possible the prisoners evacuated and the camp destroyed. The camp's position in the west of Germany meant that thousands of people were sent there as the east fell. 18000 people died in March 1945 alone, and 10000 died in the two weeks after liberation. They died of disease and neglect rather than the systematic abuse seen elsewhere.
