Appendix to the Journals of the Senate and Assembly of the ..session of the Legislature of the State of California . e then iramediatelj covered with leaves for protection fromthe sun and the drying effect of wind, so that the beets mixy not becomewilted; the prejudicial eftects oi which have already been referred to. It has frequently been recommended to put the beets in piles afterlifting, with the leaves on, in such a way that they shall be ou the outsideso as to form a protection to the beets, and, at the same time, induce the 442 Transactions of the continuation of the sugar-forming process, and, consequently, the im-provement of the juice. It remains for the future to determine thecorrectness of this theory, and the possibility and advantage of reducingit to practice. Fur the sake of economizing hand labor, the attempt has lately beenmade, with considerable advantage, to use machines for the purpose, instead of digging out the beets with spades or forks. The result is,greater certainty of securing the crop and less dependence upon laborersand weather. The accompanying drawing (fig. 17) Fig. represents a machine for this purpose—Siederslebens Patent Beet consists of a four-wheeled carriage, from which, by loosening therope, h, two long, knife-shaped tines, a a, run deep in the ground, directlyunder the rows of beets, and as the horses advance, lift the beets slightlyout of the ground, without doing them any injury. The lever, c, servesfor guiding the implement. It evidently requires fewer laborers merelyto throw the beets into little piles and to leave them, wnth a covering ofearth, until carted away, than by the present method and cleaning atthe same time. At the time of carting, or collecting, they may becleaned more easily, because the adhering earth, when dry, drops offmore readil}. In moist weather and wet ground, there is some difiicultyin using the implement. But, nevertheless, it is a great step in advanceto substitute machinery for hand
