Gustave Eiffel, French engineer, 1880. Eiffel's (1832-1923) most historic and best-known work is the Eiffel Tower, built for the Paris Exposition of 1889, staged to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution. Built entirely of iron, the Eiffel Tower remained the tallest building in the world until 1930.
