Multi colored algae around Grand Prismatic Spring, Midway Geyser Basin, Yellowstone Super volcano caldera. June 2005.

The Yellowstone super volcano is actually a caldera, the remnant of a cataclysmic eruption. Eruptions are so violent and catastrophic that this volcano could not build a volcanic cone. One of Yellowstone's features is the boiling springs and geyser vents. One of these is the Grand Prismatic Spring in the Midway Geyser Basin area. Microscopic organisms live in this hot and inhospitable environment. They form colorful layers called bacterial mats. Depending on water temperature colors varied from pale yellow and pink white to brighter yellows, oranges, to green and browns for the lowest temperatures. Boardwalks provide tourists a safe way to get close to all these phenomena
