His term was a busy one; but bisearly training with his father, his attention,study, and practice of accounts and finance,together with a stern decision of character fitted him to fulfill all the exactions of theposition, in which he made an enviablerecord, not yet forgotten. He was an earnest advocate, in face ofmuch opposition, of the introduction of apublic water supply in Brooklyn, and wasone of the original Water Commissioners;being at this time Secretary of the SewerDepartment. Municipal interests called him to Albany,where he was thrown into contact with the ,ff, #43. State officials, who recognized his worth;and during his Comptrollership he waselected Treasurer of the State of New his tenure of this important officehe became the intimate friend of Seymour, who c:nfided manythings to him; the two advising mutuallyon many matters of State. His office of State Treasurer made hima member of the Canal and School boards;and also gave him much to do with the Bank Department, in those years of muchgreater importance than at present, hencehis life at that time was one of greatactivity, labor and responsibility. In acknowledgment of his satisfactorydischarge of the Treasurers duties, he wasre-nominated ; but was defeated throughlack of party organization. Declining thePolice Commissionership of New York andBrooklyn, he retired from political during some time previouslystudied law by himself, hecomplied with his friendsurgings to be admitted tothe bar, but he had onlypracticed a few monthswh
