Thenew legislature will have 120 Democratic mem-bers as against 13 of all other parties. The gov-ernor-elect is the Hon. William J. Sanford. It isreported that the new legislature will reelect thatdistinguished member of the Committee on For-eign Relations, Senator John T. Morgan. Nogreat importance, as respects party forecasts, isto be attached to these two Southern HON. WILLIAM J. SANFORD. (Governor-elect ot Alabama.)This Months Very keen interest, however, is felt Election in . •: t • -. two Eastern in the pending fetate campaigns ofstates. Vermont and Maine. These two areabout the only Northern States whose local elec-tions are not held in November. It is, ofcourse, confidently expected that the Republicanswill carry botli States ; but great significance isattached to the size of the majority. In thePresidential election of four years ago, Vermontcast five times as many votes for McKinley as forBryan ; while Maine cast about two times and ahalf as many. This was very exceptional, how-ever, as compared with the two or three previousPresidential elections. A decided shrinkage inthe Republican majorities of these two NewEngland States would be taken as indicating acorresponding relative Democratic gain through-out the North. The Vermont election occurson September 4, and tliat of Maine on Septem-ber 10. T
