19th Century ladies indulge in the noble art of gilding cakes. They sat at the table, served tea and cut gold leaflets into broader and narrower bars, to provide each with a decent supply, the table with cups was strewn with water, and each of the guests was with a brush to decorate the people-shaped confectionary. From the Camera Obscura, a collection of Dutch humorous-realistic essays, stories and sketches in which Hildebrand, the author, takes an ironic look at the behavior of the 'well-to-do', finding them bourgeois and without a good word for them.
