Islands of Orkney, Scotland. The locked entrance to the Neolithic chambered cairn at Maeshowe. Along with some of Orkney’s other Neolithic sites, the cairn has UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Although first excavated in 1861 by James Farrer, the burial cairn had previously been broken into by Viking crusaders in the twelfth century. The crusaders left many carved inscriptions on the main chamber stones. The site is thought to date from approximately 2700BC. Now a popular tourist attraction the ancient burial cairn is managed by Historic Scotland, and is open to visitors at specified times.
