Shallow bronze bowl with verticalsides and indented base, in the centre of which is a circular perforation three-sixteenths of an inch (4 mm.)in diameter. The lip isslightly thickened, and from itto the central boss run elevenpairs of radiating embossedribs. It is damaged most atthe junction of the sides andbase, but on the whole is ingood preservation, and the rimhas now been strengthenedwith wire. The metal is beatenout thin, but the boss is percep-tibly thicker. The patinationinside is a fine green, but out-side the patinated surface ismostly covered with a browndeposit, and the sides arerather pitted by rust. Themaximum diameter is 9*6 in., the lip being a trifleincurved and thickened ; the height 2*9 in. Whenpatched, it sank in 18i Fig. BRONZE BOWLWITH PERFORATION,WOTTON (i). FOUND AT WOTTOX IN 1914. 0 A bowl ornamented inside as this is would not besuitable for ordinary purposes, as cleaning would be adifficulty; and the presence of a perforated boss isfurther support to the theory that this was a water-clock that operated by resting on water and fillinggradually in the prescribed time. By comparison withthis unexpected form, one is led to identify as the baseof a water-clock some embossed bronze fragments
