Emergency workers inspect the breech in the banks of the river Douglas near Croston in West Lancashire. The river had broken its banks following heavy rain fall. This picture was taken just after high tide time on the 30th December, with the river being in the foreground and the extensively flooded farm land beyond. A Army Chinook helicopter had been used the previous day to drop big bags of stone into the breech and if the weather is fit the environment agency plan to repeat the process again on Thursday the 31st to make a more robust repair. Meanwhile there are powerful pumps in use removing water from the farmland.
