Leg muscles. Computer artwork of the bones and outer muscles of the left leg, seen from the front (anterior view) at an oblique angle looking downwards. Frontal thigh muscles include the sartorius and quadriceps. Muscles in the lower leg are the gastrocnemius and the soleus (in the calf, collectively known as the triceps surae) and the tibialis anterior (in the shin). At top left are the bones of the lower spine and the rest of the pelvis, as well as muscles reaching down from the lower spine to the femur, all helping to stabilise and control the complex movements of the hips and knees.
