Grand Canyon, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is a huge steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River over millions of years exposing nearly two billion years of geologic history. The area has been continuously in habited by Native Americans who built settlements and many of whom consider the canyon a holy place. President Theodore Roosevelt visited in 1903 and later designated the Grand Canyon as a National Park. Despite opposition from land and mining claim holders, it was designated a National Park in 1919 under President Woodrow Wilson. Many visitors like to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. We were not prepared to attempt that — plus, I understand, you have to request permits for such an excursion. Fun to think about though.
