Cardiovascular syphilis tends tobecome clinically prominent in middle age, even though the primary infec-tion and insidious, initial degenerative changes may date back severaldecades. In old age the predisposition to cardiovascular and malignant disease isintensified, and, in addition, we find chronic bronchitis and emphysema,passive pulmonary congestion, and a return to the childish tendency Fig, 17.—Rapid aging. For example, cancer of the stomach does occur in youngpeople, but is as rare in a person under twenty, as is mumps in one overseventy. Apparent vs. Actual Age.—Two very essential points are (a) apparent ascompared with actual age; and (b) unduly rapid aging. Rapid aging may bring the man of thirty to the same status as the one ofseventy, and on the other hand, the latter, by reason of inherited vigor of con-stitution and right living may be physically twenty years under his actual clinician repeatedly encounters cases of marked arteriosclerosis in menunder thirty and the inheritance of poor structural material, lues and dissipa-tion or mental strain are the chief factors in early aging.
