Soonafter this he was made private secretary of President Lincoln, which position hefilled throughout the latters administration. He also acted as Lincolns adjutantand aid-de-camp, and it was in consequence of this that he was brevetted also saw service under Generals Hunter and Gilmore as major and assistantadjutant general. After the close of the war Mr. Hay was appointed UnitedStates Secrectary of Legation at Paris, serving in this capacity fiom 1865 to 1867,when he was appointed charge daffaires, where he served for two years, beingremoved to take a position as Secretary of Legation at Madrid, where he remaineduntil 1870, at whic
