It is not often roses fall to a level below that of carnations. The veterans last week said we would see even lower prices, until the influence of Mothers' day was felt. Some were prophesying $5 per hundred for white carnations be- fore May 13 and $3 per hundred for the other colors. There was an exceedingly large sur- plus of carnations May 6. In large lots $10 per thousand was the figure at which they were offered, and for anything mediocre or sleepy 50 cents per hundred was not refused. Orchids held their heads high during the week, but the best of them receded in price to 40 cents. Valley has joined the general price retreat, and $3 per hun- dred is high, except for some of ex- ceptional size. There is nothing encouraging to tell of the gardenia. The corner merchants ofifer it to the public at 5 cents and even lower. Longiflorum lilies are on every counter and in every icebox— splendid stock, but selling down to $4.
