Again there were retaliatingexpeditions which ravaged French settlements on theAcadian coast, and which finally, after a failure in 1706,captured Port Royal in 1709, and renamed it Annapolis,in honor of the queen. The French had made peace with theFive Nations, binding the latter to neutrality, and theycould not strike the English in the valley of the Hud-son without intruding on the Iroquois domain.
