Type locality: Mountains, 3,500 meters altitude, province of Salta, Argentina. Distribution: Known only from the type locality. Echinocactus pseudominusculus Spegazzini (Anal. Mus. Nac. Buenos Aires III. 4: 488. 1905) was given as a synonym of this species when first described.
