Thorn of the 7thWard, Salt Lake City, is the son ofGilbert McLachlan and Hannah , and was born May 30, Gatelawbridge, in the parish ofMorton, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Heattended school until his thirteeenthyear, when he engaged to work as clerkin a hardware store. While in Essex,England, working for his half brother,he first became acquainted with theprinciples of the gospel, as revealed inthese latter days, and was baptized in-to the Church July 9, 1859, by ElderJos. Silver. He was soon ordained aPriest in the Drunnow branch, of theEssex conference, and later an Elderby Alexander Ross. Nov 6, 1860, hemarried Caroline Filer. Elder Mc-. Lachlan writes: In the year 1862 mywifes mother and sister emigrated toUtah, and during that year, in answerlo prayer, the Lord, by his spirit, spoketo me audibly and promised that Ishould have the privilege of gatheringwith the Saints the following year. Thispromise was literally fulfilled, for wearrived in Salt Lake City Oct. 4, we lost by death, while enroute toUtah, our two boys. We located inSalt Lake City, living iirst in the 13thWard and later we moved into the 7thWard, where I have continued to re-side. In 1865 I became superintendentof the 7th Ward Sunday school, andsubsequently Ward clerk, which posi-tion I held till 1875.
