A 1953 view of the Co-operative department store in Carbrook, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK. Note the decorations that were in place for that year’s coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Sheffield’s Co-operative Society was founded as the Brightside and Carbrook Co-operative and opened its first shop in 1868. In 1940 the store was destroyed by German bombing during World War II. In 1950 this one storey prefabricated building replaced it and was known as Castle House (or Castle House No. 1 – the site was part of the city’s castle). In 1964 it was replaced by Castle House No. 2.

A 1953 view of the Brightside and Carbrook Co-operative store in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, UK. Note the decorations that were in place for that year’s coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Sheffield’s Co-operative Society was founded as the Brightside and Carbrook Co-operative and opened its first shop in 1868, in the suburb of Carbrook. In 1940 the store was destroyed by German bombing during World War II. In 1950 this one storey prefabricated building replaced it and was known as Castle House (or Castle House No. 1 – the site was part of the city’s castle). In 1964 it was replaced by Castle House No. 2, the Society's premier department store until it closed c. 2008. The Co-operative Group (Co-op) has developed over the years from the merger of co-operative wholesale societies and many independent retail societies. Its roots can be traced back to the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, established in 1844. This Society was based on the Rochdale Principles – which notably introduced the idea of distributing a share of profits according to purchasers through a scheme which became known as the dividend or ‘Divi’. By 1872 many similar, individual societies joined up to form the 'Co-operative Wholesale Society' (CWS) and it was wholly owned by the co-operatives which traded with it. This is an image from an old photograph album. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
