Discus throwing, 16th century artwork. Human arm holding a discus. This woodcut is from the book De arte gymnastica, by the Italian philologist and physician Girolamo Mercuriale (1530-1606). This book, originally published in Venice in 1569, is considered to have been the first on sports medicine. This artwork is from the 1577 Paris edition.
