View NW of St Nonna's Church, Altarnun, Cornwall, England, UK, with an ancient cross-head on a modern shaft by the SE churchyard gate. The church is Norman in origin but dates mainly from the C15th when the three-stage tower was completed & the N & S aisles were added. The church was restored in 1867 & repaired in 1986 when a pinnacle from the tower fell through the roof after a lightning strike. The Medieval or Early Medieval (C10th-11th) wayside cross-head was re-erected in the churchyard around 1905 on a modern granite shaft & base. Often described as Celtic, from the C6th when St Nonna (Nun, Non), mother of St David, travelled from Wales to found a religious site NE of the present church. The round wheel head has a relief equal limbed cross carved on both of its faces. It was recorded in 1896 resting on a round base S of the church.
