It will be necessary, for the sake of convenience, as well as to secure thedressings, to use a bandage made by passing a piece of linen, of a suitablewidth, just above the hips, and fastened on the right or left side of the abdo-men with tapes or buttons ; a piece fastened to this behind, and broughtbetween the legs, and secured to the bandage around the body; likewise infront, or before, in the same manner. This will effectually secure the poul-tice and the other dressings. The following figure represents this bandage, and will enable any personto prepare it in a few minutes : Fig. FISTULA. 53j When the pain prevents sleep, and should not the means recommendedsufficiently mitigate it, a portion of the diaphoretic powders may be given atbed-time, or an opium pill. Perspiration should likewise be promoted, thefeet daily bathed, warm tea drank, and the skin thus kept moist. It will be very necessary also to attend to the bowels : an emollient pur-gative should be given every day or two ; the cold-pressed castor oil is verygood, the dose of which is an ounce. Sometimes the parts become so swelled that any kind of physic causesmuch pain. Under such circumstances injections must be relied upon. With this treatment the inflammation will gradually subside, and matteror an abscess will form, which is usually very large and extensive.
