To protect andstrengthen its standard types of steel span-wirepoles the Pittsburgh Pole & Forge Company,Pittsburgh, Pa., has recently originated the ideaof swedging by its patent hot process a sleeve24 in. long on the poles at the ground of the length of the sleeve projects above gjeeve Qnthe ground and half is buried. The sleeve is p0]emade of the same thickness of metal as thelower part of the pole itself and in the swedging processis practically welded to the pole. It is claimed that theaddition of this sleeve doubles the strength of the poles, and by preventing any corrosion of the pole itself morethan doubles the life. PORTABLE HACK SAW The accompanying illustration shows a portable hacksaw recently placed on the market by the Massachusetts. 30 minutes without resting. The saw takes a 14-in. bladeand makes a clean straight cut, and as the saw is held in aframe, the danger of breaking the blade is reduced to aminimum. The principal object sought by the manufacturer of thismachine was to construct a device which was so light thatit could be easily transported and so simple that it couldbe set up and operated by one man. The manufacturersmake a special blade which is particularly adapted for thissaw. Portable Hack Saw Saw Works, of Chicopee, Mass.
