Placebo. Hands holding two identical capsules, one of which is medically inactive (a placebo) while the other is a drug or medicine. In clincal drug trials a placebo is used as a control. 'Double-blind' trials require that neither the patient nor the experimenter knows which is the control and which is the drug, in order to reduce bias.
