Metal bucket on wooden floorboards corner white walls prison cell, interior 1866 Guardhouse Building, Fort Laramie, Wyoming, USA

The Fort Laramie Guardhouse was built in stone in 1866 to hold 40 prisoners in cells below an upper floor housing the guards. Alcohol was responsible for most breaches of discipline. The cells (one seen here) were unheated and had no furniture. Prisoners ate (a daily ration of bread and water), slept and performed all necessary human functions in the guardhouse. The US Army owned Fort Laramie 1849-1890 (before which the site was occupied by two privately owned fur trading forts). In the 1950s and 1960s it was restored by the National Park Service.
