William Gifford (1756-1826), British poet, editor and critic, reading a book. Gifford wrote poetry as a child, but was forced to learn a trade. A local surgeon bought out the apprenticeship and sent him to school. Gifford went on to study at Oxford University, becoming tutor to the son of the Earl of Grosvenor. His poetic works include 'The Baviad' (1791) and 'The Maeviad' (1795). From 1809 to 1824, he edited the 'Quarterly Review' Artwork from 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858 by English printer and antiquarian John Nichols and his son John Bowyer Nichols.
