Return by the same road to the Vesle. Cross the river and follow it (as perItinerary, p. 134), to the village of Champigny. Slightly before entering the village of Merfy is a cemetery con-taining graves of French, British and German soldiers. At the entrance to the same village, on the right, stands a castle, severelydamaged, which, early in September, 1914, served as headquarters to GeneralFoch (photo above). A little farther is the church, almost entirely destroyed. At the church, turn to the right and follow the main street, which is linedwith houses in ruins. On leaving Merfy, cross the railway
