At the request ofBishop White and Horace Binney, Mr. De Lancey,though he much preferred to continue in hischosen profession, accepted the office. This wasthat old college in Philadelphia founded byBenjamin Franklin, Chief-Justice Allen, and othernoted men of that day. He also received (in 1827)the degree of D. In 1833 he waselected (the three united churches being separatedin that year) assistant minister of St. Peters church, Philadel-phia, with the re-version of the rec-torship upon thedeath of BishopWhite, who wascontinued rectorof all three. Thatevent occurred in1836, and Dr. DeLancey contin-ued rector of ,when, upon thedivision of thediocese of NewYork, then em-bracing the wholestate, he was elect-ed bishop of west-ern New York,that half of the state west of a north-and-southline just east of the city of Utica. He was con-secrated at Auburn in the new diocese on 7 May,1839, Bishop Griswold, of Connecticut, being theconsecrator, assisted by Bishop George W. Doane, ofNew Jersey, and Bishops Henry R. Onderdonk andBenjamin T. Onderdo
