There is a very limited number of the old members who joined the society a year or two after its organ- ization still living and one of these is A. W. Latham, secretary of the so- ciety, who is holding the office now for the twenty-third year. The so- ciety publishes, besides its annual re- port, a monthly magazine of 40 pages, which medium of communication with- in the membership is found to be very helpful and strengthening to the or- ganization. In this northwest country, with its peculiar climatic and soil conditions, there are many new prob- lems to work out in horticulture, and especially In fruit growing, and the urgent necessity of their solution has something to do no doubt with the strength and vigor of this organiza- tion. Acting under the advice of the so- ciety the state a few years ago pur- chased a tract of land suitable for the purpose and has now in operation and has had for some time in con- junction with the society a farm for the sole purpose of breeding new fruits adapted to local conditions. Many of these new fruits are now be- ing distributed, and they are going largely to the members of the State Horticultural Society for testing. This Minneapolis a Trading Center.
