The science and art of surgery : being a treatise on surgical injuries, diseases, and operations . Tig. 495.—Ankylosis after Hir-joint Dis-ease : Angular Flexion of Limb on Pel-vis. Fig. 496.—Ankylosis after Hip-joiut Dis-ease: Curvature of Spine in placingFoot on Ground. The extent of the angular deformity in this kind of ankylosis can al-ways be easily measured in tlie following way. If the patient be laidflat upon his back, so that the lumbar spine touches the mattress onwhich he is lying, the knee will be raised above that of the sound limb, and the angle formed between the thigh and trunk will be at once veryperceptible. But if tlie knee be depressed so as to be brought to thesame level as that of the sound limb, then the anterior superior space ofthe ilium is rotated forwards, and tlie lumbar spine arched forwards toan extent proportionate to the angle of deformity. This angular ankylosis of the hip-joint requires to be corrected, andthe limb to be brought into a straight position, so that, even if it beshortened, the patient may, by means of a high-heeled boot, rest it up
