SCHISTOSOMA MANSONI
Schistosoma mansoni is a blood fluke belonging to the genus of trematode parasites. Schistosomiasis, also called bilharziasis, is a serious public health problem in developing countries, affecting several million persons. The disease is transmitted by water contaminated with schistosoma larvae. The flukes can measure several millimeters and live up to 15 years. Flukes are found in pairs in the veins of the abdomen, liver, intestine, spleen and rectum. The female lays several hundred eggs every day. Symptoms of schistosomiasis include itching, diarrhea, fever, and skin rash. Several drugs can be used for treatment. Good hygiene is the best preventive measure. Here the anterior part of the schistosome.
