Havana is based around the largest natural port in the Caribbean. It was founded in 1519 and became the capital of Cuba in 1558. It grew rapidly as a major Spanish port in the New World despite attacks by pirates. Casablanca is the small village opposite the old town of Havana at the entrance to the harbour
