Acute conjunctivitis. Close-up of the eyes of a 1 year-old baby with acute conjunctivitis. Yellow pus is seen encrusted around the child's eye's, an indication of eye infection. Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the surface of the eye and lines the eyelids. Causes include allergic reactions, such as hay fever, and infection by bacteria or viruses (as seen here). Symptoms may include redness, irritation, itching, and a discharge. This is one of the most common medical complaints. Treatment depends on the cause and severity.
