There has not been much life in the flower business since Memorial day and that occasion, on which many built high hopes, did not bring the satisfactory results that were so confidently ex- pected. Flowers of all kinds were plen- tiful j in fact, cut stock was a glut and Eotted plants were in great profusion, ut as a whole the day was somewhat of a disappointment. Magnolia and galax wreaths with artificial flowers, at moderate prices, ranging from $1 to $5, found ready demand, while made-up bouquets of fresh flowers, which in pre- vious years found a strong call, proved slow sellers. In several of the sur- rounding towns and villages, however, florists dependent on the Providence market for their supply found a ready call for fresh bouquets and the dealers worked off everything they had or could get. This was equally so with potted and bedding stock. Various Notes. Miss Ruby Aitken has taken a posi- tion in the office of S. J. Renter & Son, at Westerly. William H. Tarbox, of West Green- wich, the '' dahlia king,'' is about again after being laid up several months with rheumatism. H. W. Taylor, of the Boston Fertil- izer Co., Boston, was a caller on the trade bere last week. The Rhode Island State College, at Kingston, has received notice that iH will shortly receive an appropriation of $10,000 from the United States govern- ment with which to carry on coopera- tive agricultural work.
