There was probably an element of voyeurism in their ‘good deeds’. More radical thinkers at the time wanted solutions to poverty, not charitable hand-outs. The origin of the word ‘slum’ originally referred to a rented room and was soon being used to describe squalid conditions in cities like London and Manchester.
