Hand joint fusion scars in rheumatoid arthritis. Post-operative scars on the left hand of a 68-year-old woman who has had joints in her hand fused to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis. The thumb has had a metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint fusion, while the middle finger has had a proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint fusion. There have been revisions of Swanson silicone implants in the MCP joints of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers (scars seen on knuckles). Tendon realignments have also been performed. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the immune system attacking the body's own tissues, causing progressive joint and cartilage destruction. Surgery is used to repair and remove destroyed tissues.
