Chesil Beach extends some 18 k, all the way from Portland to West Bay. Attributed to the phenomenon of 'longshore drift', the pebbles are graded in size along its length. Being no more than shingle at West Bay, the pebbles gradually increase in size until they reach the proportions of a baked potato in Chesil Cove, on the Isle of Portland. In former times, it was said that if you dropped of a fisherman anywhere along the beach, at night, he would know where he was simply by the size of the pebbles!
