The notching on the telson is variable, but the general shape of the telson is constant and easily distinguished from that of the other species. It is probable that some at least of Chevreux's specimens were the same as these. He records that the specimens before him had either three, or two, or no dorsal teeth; but the postero-inferior angle of pleon segment 3 does not seem to have been examined. I must confess that in studying the Terra Nova collection the current opinion as to a "widely distributed" species probably allayed the critical faculties. A re-examination of the two specimens from the Antarctic recorded in that report would, I expect, prove them to be distinct from the New Zealand species, and either this or the next species.
