An object that attracted our attention was the colossal bronzestatue of Columbus, a gift from the late Emperor of the French,(Colon itself in name is the Spanish equivalent for Columbus.)The great navigator is represented as protecting with his right handthe kneeling figure of an Indian maiden, whose features apparentlyseem moved by the kind act. To the rear of the Columbus statueis the De Lesseps house, where the famous French engineer livedfor a time when he essayed (to him) the insurmountable task ofcutt
